Why Maths Homework Takes So Long
Your child isn't being dramatic — and you're not imagining it. There are real, well-documented reasons why homework time turns into a nightly negotiation. Understanding them is the first step to knowing what's actually going on.
First: you're not imagining the struggle
If maths homework takes three times longer than reading or spelling, that gap is real and it's common. For many families, maths is the one subject that reliably turns an otherwise calm evening into a negotiation. The child who was perfectly fine at school sits down at home and seems to forget everything.
This isn't a sign your child is behind — not necessarily. But it is worth paying attention to. The "why" matters, because the causes are different and so are the responses.
The automaticity gap: when number facts still take effort
Think about reading. A child who still needs to sound out individual letters can't focus on understanding the story — too much mental energy goes to decoding. Maths works the same way.
When basic number facts — like 7 + 8, or 6 × 4 — aren't automatic yet, every multi-step problem becomes cognitively expensive. The child has to hold the big problem in mind and work out each small step at the same time. That's a lot to ask of a primary-school brain.
This is called the automaticity gap — and it's one of the most common reasons maths homework drags. The child isn't slow at maths. They're spending processing power on steps that should feel instant by now.
Worth noticing: Does your child pause on every calculation, including simple ones? Or only on certain types of problems? The answer points to different things.

The scaffolding gap: why school looks fine but home doesn't
This one surprises a lot of parents. School reports are good. The teacher hasn't raised concerns. And yet homework is a disaster.
At school, children have constant scaffolding: the teacher's voice, a worked example on the board, a classmate to glance at, immediate feedback when they go wrong. That scaffolding quietly fills in gaps that the child doesn't even know they have.
At home, alone, the scaffolding disappears — and suddenly what was manageable becomes impossible. The child isn't pretending. The support structure they relied on is just gone.
This is why "but they're fine at school" and "homework is a nightmare" can both be completely true at the same time.
Maths anxiety: avoidance dressed up as difficulty
Maths anxiety is well-documented in children as young as six. It's not a personality trait and it's not drama — it's a genuine stress response that affects working memory. When it kicks in, a child who actually knows the material can't access it.
What does maths anxiety look like at the kitchen table? Not always crying or refusing outright. It can look like:
- Suddenly needing the bathroom or a drink the moment the books come out
- Completing three problems and then "getting tired"
- Starting to work, then erasing everything and starting again
- Working very quickly and getting everything wrong (rushing to get it over with)
- Working very slowly with constant reassurance-seeking
None of these are wilful naughtiness. They're all ways a child's brain tries to escape something that feels threatening.
A useful question to ask yourself: Does the struggle start before the maths begins, or once they're actually doing it? Avoidance before the work usually signals anxiety. Struggling once they're working usually points to a genuine gap.
The familiarity gap: it may look different from what you remember
If you sit down to help and find yourself thinking "I don't remember learning this in primary school," that feeling is worth naming. The Australian Curriculum is periodically updated, and the sequence of when topics are introduced does shift between versions.
If something feels unfamiliar from your own schooling, that's often why — not because your child is struggling with something unusual, but because the pathway through maths looks a little different now than it did a generation ago. Your child may be working at a perfectly appropriate level for their year; it just doesn't match your own memory of primary school maths.

The question that actually helps
When homework is hard, the instinct is to ask: "Is my child behind?" That's an understandable question, but it's not the most useful one.
The more useful questions are:
- Is this slow across all of maths, or just certain topics?
- Is this new, or has it been building for a while?
- Does it happen at school too, or only at home?
- Does the struggle look like not knowing — or not wanting to start?
Each of those answers points in a different direction. A child who struggles only with fractions is in a very different situation to a child who struggles across the board. A child who's fine at school but stuck at home may just need the scaffolding rebuilt differently — not a tutor, not extra worksheets.
